Louisiana National Guard helicopter crews lowered more than 100 bundles of recycled Christmas trees between guidelines in the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge to help fight erosion. The bundles held a total of about 5,000 trees. "If this program wasn't here, people would just end up sending the trees to a landfill," said Drew Wirwa, assistant manager of Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge. "This provides a great opportunity to recycle the Christmas trees." The branches slow waves and trap soil. Over time the trees decompose, but the soil remains.
