Obama to award Civil War Medal of Honor on Nov. 6: After an act of Congress and years of lobbying by... #airforce

After an act of Congress and years of lobbying by descendants and admirers, a Union Army officer who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Battle of Gettysburg more than 150 years ago will be recognized for his heroism Nov. 6 when President Obama grants him the nation’s highest commendation for battlefield valor. Obama will bestow the Medal of Honor on 1st Lt. Alonzo H. Cushing, who will receive the Medal of Honor posthumously for his actions while serving as commanding officer of Battery A, 4th United States Artillery, Artillery Brigade, 2nd Corps, Army of the Potomac during combat operations in the vicinity of Cemetery Ridge, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on July 3, 1863.
