The Navy Library Service is working to put e-library systems on ships, allowing sailors to choose from thousands of digital books to read while at sea. This is a challenge because limited bandwidth on surface ships and the complete lack of it on submarines prevents seamless e-book downloads while at sea. The library service in June released a request for information on how it might create an e-library system for ships and subs. Next they’ll solicit bids from companies that could meet their requirements. A test run is tentatively scheduled for next spring with one submarine and four ships, and repr...
