An acceptable injury: Challenging the perception of mental ill-health

When Lt Col Nicky Murdoch was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and subsequently developed depression, nobody questioned the validity of her illness. It was an ‘acceptable injury’. When a soldier needed medical treatment after an IED explosion sent a rifle muzzle through his chest, a radio through his arm and burning shrapnel the length of his body, nobody questioned his physical pain. When he then sought help for the guilt and mental pain he felt that one of his colleagues had died in the same explosion, the soldiers he had once called friends turned on him.
