The ‘shocks’ administered to the global financial system by the trans-Atlantic financial crisis of 2008-09 and the subsequent European debt crisis have accelerated the underlying ‘power shift’ taking place in the world economy with the rise of Emerging Economies. The impact of these shifts and shocks has been felt by currencies around the world in a variety of ways. Responding to these pressures, monetary policy authorities and governments have intervened both to stabilise currencies and markets and to protect currencies to the extent possible from the impact of both uncertainty and global imbalances. Both the fiscal and monetary policy response of various governments to the global economic slowdown have had their own impact on currencies.
