Oil wells south of Mosul burn days after key town retaken

But now al-Jobori says his men are unable to control the oil well fires. It's an IS tactic the Iraqis fear they will continue to face as they close in on Mosul: There are a number of small wells under IS control around the city that the militants are likely to set ablaze as well, though they are nowhere near the size of Iraq's more significant oil fields in the south, the Kurdish region and around Kirkuk.
