I don't think they are interested in hitting the US mainland , I think the long range missiles are to threaten Guam and maybe hawaii . They are not stupid , they know they can't possibly win a nuclear or even conventional war with the US , they just want to make sure a war is going to cost the US A LOT , and if they convince the US and Japan that even a successful war and a win , will come with an enormous cost , with maybe half a dozen or a dozen bombs on airbases in Japan and Guam before any nuclear exchanges on cities happen , then it becomes obvious that invading North Korea isn't really worth it , and in that case they achieve DETERRENCE , deterrence from conventional as well as nuclear attack , which is what they really want . They can do that with long range missiles like the new K10 without ever needing to develop anything to threaten the US mainland . And besides ...
