Tomorrow's veteran headlines: Lawmakers and advocates push for advance funding for all VA programs.

Joe Gromelski/Stars and Stripes WASHINGTON — Leaders of the House and Senate Veterans Affairs committees want to make sure the Department of Veterans Affairs has all of its funding a full year in advance, even in the event of a government shutdown. But so far, VA officials haven’t publicly backed the idea. On Wednesday, lawmakers from both parties will join with veterans advocates to rally in support of the advance appropriations idea, one that has been circulating Capitol Hill for almost nine months. About 86 percent of VA’s annual budget is approved a full year in advance. Congress made that change back in 2009 to make sure critical veterans programs -- like hospital operations and health care research -- weren’t disrupted by annual delays to the congressional appropriations process.
