Reservist king at vegetable throwing 09/10/2015 He was the last to compete and his pea was defrosting...but Royal Navy Reservist Graham Butterworth overcame the odds to be crowned World Pea Throwing Champion. The Officer Cadet from HMS King Alfred in Portsmouth managed to hurl his garden pea 28.67 metres to lift the golden hand-holding-a-pea trophy. The championships, which began 15 years ago, are held outside the Lewes Arms pub in Mount Place, Lewes, Sussex. “We had to use peas provided by the pub – Birdseye garden peas. They were frozen but I was the last to throw so it was very squidgy,” said Graham, 33, a father of four, who was cheered on by members of his family.
