YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan (AFNS) -- The class of eight crew members sat in front of the instructor as he clicked through a slideshow that had images of edible plants, makeshift shelters and frostbitten fingers. "Some of you guys are gonna see some gigantic insects today," said the tall, sandy-blonde instructor teaching survival, evasion, resistance and escape tactics. "Gigantic insects. It's like Indiana Jones stuff." Although the instructor had a laid-back demeanor, the slides told extreme stories: a man in Vietnam who evaded the enemy by floating down a river; watching a man's heel peel off because it had been wet too long; and how to throw off the pursuit of dog handlers.
