The retiring Air Force chief of staff says the service needs as many as 60,000 more airmen to accomplish today’s missions. Mark Welsh participated in June 24 retirement ceremony at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, though his last official day on active duty is Friday. He recently sat down with Defense News’ Aaron Mehta for an interview at the Pentagon. The Air Force’s active-duty component is budgeted to remain flat at 317,000 airmen from fiscal 2016 to fiscal 2017, which begins Oct. 1, according to budget documents.
