Problems, delays plague Veterans Choice program.

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (Tribune News Service) — The sore on Ron Anderson’s ear was small, but it would prove to be a giant headache. The 75-year-old U.S. Navy veteran from Sartell made an appointment in February at the St. Cloud VA Health Care System after finding the sore, which would turn out to be melanoma. The wait to see a Veterans Affairs dermatologist could be several weeks, so Anderson opted to use the Veterans Choice program. It allows veterans to get medical care from doctors outside the VA system if the wait times are too long or they live too far from a VA facility. However, Anderson’s experience with the program has been frustrating. Each appointment required waiting at least five to 10 days for approval, sometimes more.
