Today in history: How the Constitution sank the Java

1812: In the War of 1812, the super-frigate USS Constitution, commanded by Captain William Bainbridge, sank HMS Java off the coast of Brazil after a three-hour slugfest. Java‘s destruction marked the third British loss in less than a year. In addition to the Java, the Constitution had won a short fight against the British Guerrière, and the Constitution's sister ship, United States, had dismasted the 35-gun Macedonian off the Canary Islands.
