US Army Commendation Medal: A Symbol of Outstanding Service

The US Army Commendation Medal is a prestigious award given to members of the United States Armed Forces for meritorious service or achievement in a combat or non-combat situation. It is one of the highest accolades that can be bestowed upon an individual, and it serves as recognition for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to excellence.

History of the US Army Commendation Medal

The medal was first created in 1945 by President Harry S. Truman as an extension of the Certificate of Merit which had been established during World War II. The certificate recognized military personnel who distinguished themselves by outstanding acts or services during wartime but could not be awarded any existing medals due to their rank.

In 1947, after recognizing that there was still a need for a medal for non-combat servicemen and women who performed exceptionally well while serving their country outside wartime situations, Truman created the Commendation Ribbon with Metal Pendant.

Over time it evolved into what we know today as the US Army Commendation Medal – although this version has been modified since its inception – with more stringent requirements added over time ensuring only those achieving truly outstanding feats are eligible recipients.
